Dogs play a central role in divorces in various ways. At New Phase Law, we aim to offer a fresh perspective on navigating the underlying divorce process, while also raising awareness about some of the often-overlooked individuals involved - the dogs of divorce.

Dogs are sometimes the only friends we have in times of family strife or insecurity.  The companionship they provide can help humans navigate the most challenging times and transition into the Next Phase of their lives.

Dogs can be a welcome distraction from the other humans around us and can provide deep, nonverbal understanding when hearing more words is the last thing you need, when words are used as a weapon against you, or when words simply fall short altogether.

For a dose of precisely such inspiration, read about Mo the Service Dog here:   Book Cover photo? [link to our Mo page]

Unfortunately, dogs also experience the harsh and cruel side of divorce alongside their humans.  Dogs undoubtedly experience stress and uncertainty when they know their family is unstable.  Dogs are sometimes fought over as property in the divorce, and even worse, dogs are used as pawns to hold hostage or inflict emotional distress on the other party.  *Please always report any form of animal cruelty to law enforcement authorities!: Report Animal Cruelty Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region;

For those canines who get the “ruff” end of the deal in divorce, we are SO grateful for community partners  such as:

When people think of animals that form lifelong bonds with humans, dogs instantly come to mind – and for good reason. This is often observed in human-canine friendships, where dogs benefit from being cared for and offered love and companionship by their human companions. In contrast, humans benefit from receiving companionship, loyalty, and love from their dogs. These remarkable creatures have evolved alongside humans for thousands of years, developing an almost supernatural ability to read our emotions and respond accordingly.

If you put in the work to help that dog, and if you can break that fear of humans, they’ll love you forever for it. Even rescue dogs with traumatic backgrounds can form intense bonds with the right human companion. For example, qualities of sociality include lifelong attachment, reduced intra-group aggression, and enhanced cooperation. This lifelong attachment isn’t just one-sided – dogs genuinely become integrated members of human families, offering protection, comfort, and unwavering loyalty.
